I think you'll find an equal number of Hello Kitty items released over the same time frame..

This isn't arguing that violent video games reduce crime rates (although...) so much as it is a refutation of the claim that violent video games lead to violent crimes.

I hear ya. I'm with Dani on this though, Doom & Mortal Combat are somewhat tolerable as they're obviously trenched in fantasy. Postal and GTA are ethically broken and even if they don't result in real-life violence, they certainly do nothing for building positive moral character. I liken it to the kids who like to go in the back yard and shoot squirrels with their new pellet guns.

Woah woah woah...watching/playing something that has no redeeming moral value and going out to inflict harm on something are two VERY different actions. Your argument is absolutely misleading and non-constructive.

I mean, generally speaking, watching "American Idol" doesn't build positive moral character either*. That's not what it's meant to do.

What "American Idol" and "GTA" provide is entertainment. They both succeed in doing this (for their particular audiences). There is no evidence that either one causes lasting psychological trauma or that either will lead you to perform illegal actions.

Neither is remotely close to shooting squirrels.

*Alternatively, it can be argued that some facets of American Idol, and GTA, do provide a "win" for your person. I mean, GTA would improve hand-eye coordination, directional awareness, as well as puzzle-solving skills.

Am I saying that GTA is the only way, or the best way to improve these skills? No. I'm just saying that the experience of playing GTA isn't valueless.

It isn't meant to teach you morality -- the MA rating on the game implies that your morality system should already be well-developed before you even get a chance to play the game. It's just meant to entertain, and it does.

I have used my power of the pocketbook (not that anyone has ever noticed, mind you) to NOT spend monies on entertainment that I find objectionable. One case in point, a movie like "Natural Born Killers"; a subject that provides nothing to society, offers no point of view that I'm interested in, and the people that are interested in funding directors for providing that point of view to the public should really think about social consciousness a bit more. Elevate and iconize Serial Killers, sounds like a win-win [/sarcasm].

I've seen Postal and can understand why some would find it humorous, but is it good to spend money to perpetuate that kind of sick fun?
Shoving a gun up a cat's ass to act as a silencer? All it takes is someone who isn't very well developed morally/mentally to re-enact any of that behavior and we all fail.

I'm no prude by any means, but it saddens me when people don't care about the background noises that permeate our media. Don't get me started on the music industry. Did you ever "really" listen to what message songs like "the Macarena" are really saying?

On the subject of shooting squirrels. Is it really wrong to do so? And why is it bad? Morality/ethics issues abound.

Not trying to argue with ya Marty, I just don't find any value in supporting certain media with my $$$. As for "American Idol", even as a teen I wouldn't waste my time with that crap. What reality TV I watch is cooking based [Top Chef, etc].

I'll agree to disagree with you here..
